One of the most gorgeous looking movies ever. God bless Vilmos. Incredibly charismatic Gould performance. Put it on the short list as one of the great L.A. movies.  Hayden as a washed up writer and drunk menace of a man. Fun and interesting mystery to be solved also.

The guy who says his son is living proof of his sin. All of them pretending the grandma isn’t dead. The bride having braces. Geraldine Chaplin. Mia Farrow counting up to 15 before being stopped. Dino’s vanity plate being simply DINO. The sisters being named Buffy and Muffin. The Italian not being subtitled. Is this because Altman wanted the viewer to be confused, or because the DVD is very old, or because I couldn’t figure out how to fix it…

[Robert Altman #23]

I can't say that Robert Altman's 1980s output does a heckuva lot for me. At the same time, I rather wish he'd continued his quest to adapt the great and the good of the American theatre, rather than moving back into serious pictures as soon as he got the chance. I know a lot of people struggle with theatrical adaptations, but as a theatre kid I believe there's great merit in them.

Given Sam Shepard's presence, there's…

Nashville: A City On Film at Belcourt Theatre

(50th Anniversary screening with post-screening discussion w/ Keith Carradine)

I moved to Nashville two years ago today, so no better time than to catch Robert Altman’s love letter to Music City on the big screen with Nashville (1975). Altman captures the city of Nashville, TN perfectly with its satirical southern charm, proud of their roots in country music and southern culture. The film takes us on a beautiful journey of 1970s Nashville,…

If it were 3 men we would call them gay and be over the whole thing...I don't know what to make of this film. Watching it was sort of like looking a woman as she wonders if another woman likes her or not snd she does a proper and thorough investigation into the matter. I heard Altman was inspired by Persona and there are similarities between the two. I think Persona is great, but I couldn't explain why; I just…

Boy I am a bit conflicted on this one, and I was really looking forward to this.

I get the appeal and that it’s a big and influential movie, there’s so many films today that wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for this, it’s basically “the post-modern Western”, but this contained a story and a lot of characters that I really care for that much. I don’t find either of these central protagonists that interesting nor did I find the…
