Jack’s review published on Letterboxd:
Basically, a Disney Plus TV movie sent straight to theaters. I’m not even fronting. You can tell straight from the first ten minutes of this film that this was reshot multiple times. The editing is frantic, incoherent sometimes, and filled with inconsistencies. It doesn’t help that the CGI is muddy and shoddy. That’s not the only bad thing about the film.
As much as I dig Anthony Mackie as Captain America, he still runs into the same problems that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had. The political espionage in this is entirely dumbed down to a baby’s first political science lesson. The film tries to drill down the point that we should all get along with authoritarians. In this current political climate, that’s the wrong message that we should be sending to general audiences.
I have to question how we got from Winter Soldier to now this with its political themes. At least Winter Soldier had the balls to sneak its themes of shadow governments and the rage of authoritarianism. It doesn’t help that the film has three themes that are crushed and thrown around in a two-hour time span with no room to breathe.
If Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is leading the Avengers now, good luck because Marvel defies all odds in the completely wrong way. This current phase is completely aimless and filled with stepbacks, not step forwards. I wish Marvel good luck with the rest of the slate this year. Because, they are in trouble!!
