Bohemian Rhapsody

I am one of those people whose parents brought them up on music from Queen and other 80’s bands, and full disclosure, I do think Queen are one of the greatest bands of all time. This film is a brief and fun history of Queen, mainly front-man Freddie Mercury, playing out all the surface level stuff you’d expect from a music biopic. Unfortunately, we don’t get much more than that, the odd scene teases a further look into his psyche, but we’re never really given anything more than what you could read about the band online. I enjoyed what we got but never felt satisfied by the answers, or lack of, to the questions raised in the film about why Freddie makes some of the decisions that he does. With all this being said, I still had a great time watching this film and Rami Malik’s performance as Freddie might just be one of the best this year, he is truly a force to be reckoned with and he completely owned all the emotional beats and nailed the musical performances. In fact, I would go as far to say that the majority of this film was a three-star film and the final twenty minutes or so were a five-star. Don’t go in with high expectations but do go in knowing you’re about to have a lot of fun. There’s a better film to be made for the band but for now this will do as an overview of their rise to fame, I’d love to see a deeper dive into Freddie and maybe we’ll get that one day, just keep Rami Malik!

-This film needs to un-credit Bryan Singer as director, he didn’t do his job, never turned up and got fired. Seeing his name at the start left a bad taste in my mouth and Hollywood needs to stop hiring him!
