STEVEN 🏳️🌈’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Substance is one of my favorite horror films of the 2020s, and was at the top of my list last year before the masses came, so to see that it's been nominated for five Academy Awards is truly fulfilling. Been torn and turned off with even posting about it regularly considering both ends of the review spectrum seem to miss the entire point of this, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it at home, which is what I spent this morning doing.
Despite the subject matter about beauty culture and self-confidence being fairly personal with a capacity for depth in the individual viewer, this is not a deeply dramatic movie at all. It throws everything in your face in all three acts with an increasingly silly approach to the body horror gore gags, which are brought to life with sleek nods to cult classic genre titles of the past. Freaky feminist schlock-fest meant to be provocative and pointed. Demi Moore deserves that win, without a doubt.
