Nice to see Paul Feig lean more into his schlock comedy stylings instead of trying to emulate David Fincher in humiliating failure.

Too goofy to be impactful for the most part. Strong, well-considered efforts in practical effects and cinematography are diffused by corny production design, cartoonish characterisations, and insistent sequences of violence, especially in the final act [OoOoOoh - très extrême!]. The biggest disappointment about The Substance, in all its heavy handedness, is that this is going to become the contemporary frame of reference for the whole New Extremity genre in the eyes of general audiences world over.
