Terry Gilliam's visionary masterpiece of a man trapped in the bureaucrat nightmare is funny, bizarre and creative. The script is filled with hilarious details while we learn about this dark retro futurism society. A denial of errors while literally everything goes wrong and no one can take responsibility without the proper paperwork. This inefficient fascist state is so wrapped up in it's control that the population doesn't even care about the terrorism that's happening all around them. I love the…

Miyazaki at his finest. Watching the newly remastered 4K release in theater is an absolute delight. This film already looks amazing and getting that extra detail heightens it all that much more.
The themes present in much of Miyazaki's work of environmentalism, human's abject cruelty with war and exploitation, and a naturalistic spirituality drive everything in this film. The central conflict of Iron Town and the creatures of the forest sets a clear narrative that our outsider main character moves…

Kevin Smith's strong script and great performances by a lot of different actors help push this film to be one of his best. It's clear that Kevin Smith's religious upbringing and thoughtful nature created a deeply personal dive into what God and religion mean to him. Of course, bringing Jay and Silent Bob along enables him to keep the low brow humor in the mix as well, but I think that helps the film feel more human. Of course like…

The rough spots in this movie do weight it down a bit. Pretty much everything at Asgard, while visually interesting, drag the momentum of the story. The main exception is Tom Hiddleston, whose charismatic performance always elevates every scene he's in. Meanwhile, Kat Dennings is also doing the heavy lifting in every Earth scene, especially in the beginning of the film. The final act battle sequence in London is pretty great though.

A little bit of a slow burn at first, but this stylish samurai western set in 1790s Britain comes out strong once the film starts to get going. Tim Roth leads a group of ruffians whose plunder gets swiped. As they terrorize in search for their lost treasure, young Tornado, a Japanese woman travelling with her father doing a puppet show, gets caught up in the violence and then seeks vengeance. The movie feels like a film from 20 or 30 years ago, with it's lo-fi aesthetic and steady pacing. The movie looks great too, with the country side setting and film grain. Really cool movie.

Haunting and interesting film on race and the value we put on others. On this rewatch, my mind was comparing it to Being John Malkovich, with it's themes of the sacrificing others in search for living forever. The way they describe being the enger in their own body really echoes the ending of that film. Mind control and hypnosis are great unsettling story elements that always put me off. The subtle shifts and hiding the sinister underbelly until the reveals happen are really fun and work really well on a revisit.
