well folks, it seems like it’s time to wrap it up! we don’t need anymore beauty and the beast-frog princess stories. this is the one. penelope (2006) belongs right next to shrek (2001) in discussions about the tent-pole media of the fairytale deconstruction era. it is so creative and iconic, and its style is so underrated. the way penelope literally invented twee!!! penelope commits so fully to exploring its premise. i was impressed, i was moved, i yelled at the screen. i had a phenomenal time. 

a lot of reviews point out that penelope was never ugly (“men are just weak!”, etc.) and that is true—it is still christina ricci and she is beautiful + conventionally attractive. she looks cute as hell with the pig nose, but that’s movie magic. maybe it would hit harder if they had cast a more normal looking actress, but penelope having been beautiful all along isn’t the point and i love that it’s not. it’s awesome that the film doesn’t wait until the end to have penelope reveal herself and give a speech at prom about being beautiful on the inside. she owns her image as an uggo and people actually love her for it. the little girls all dres as her for halloween melted my heart. the conversation that she had with her mom about giving up chasing beauty was ahead of its time. it’s a message that both the 2010s body positivity movement and modern tiktok femcels are too uncomfortable to sit with: you don’t need to be beautiful to be happy. it’s not about the power of the curse, 🗣️ it’s the power you give the curse! fuck yeah. stan penelope. required viewing in this household.

none of the show within a show acts feature the blackface so that’s nice 😃👍 #winning

cary grant in this movie is so evil and they really made me watch ingrid bergman beg his bitch ass to stay with her, CRYING because she thought she ruined their relationship by stating her needs! 

you can pretend that their casual relationship was empowering if you want. me personally, i was born at night, but it wasn’t last night. bum behavior on his part. i think we should make him to walk the plank.

beautiful, beautiful sets and s tier title sequence. overall, indiscreet is stylish, but i could not get over the swelling of the orchestra every time grant and bergman looked at each other. it started very early. like… you know that scene in pride & prejudice (2005) where they talk about the power of a poorly timed sonnet in driving away love? yeah.

anyways, shout out to ingrid bergman’s radiant glowing skin. she stays looking fresh and dewy. mad respect.

if only all proto lifetime parent-propaganda movies were this weird. tv movies were really something else in the seventies. i feel euphoria vibes. it’s giving the stepford wives, the graduate energy, but also public television after school special. a “very special episode”. given its uncomfortable, sinister (not derogatory) tone, i’m glad it hasn’t been lost to time and people can still watch it. i can’t imagine the odds it must have overcome to even make it to streaming.

intro sequence went CRAZY and it just went up from there. fucking nuts from start to finish. the blonde song was phenomenal. how is this movie so slept on

i truly, desperately want to understand why people like this movie so much. i went into this expecting to love it and hoped to come out of it a #1 mikey madison best actress defender. i liked her, but unfortunately i also feel that anora the film is deeply unspecial. maybe all of the hype + the best picture win got my hopes too high. i thought i’d like anora based on the set-up alone, and i’m disappointed that i didn’t like it as much as everybody else seems to.

i think the main problem was that i just didn’t find it very funny. most of the humor that worked for me was situational. the dialogue might have been “realistic” and maybe it’s very boomer of me to it it, but i found listening to a bunch of people yell ‘fuck’ at each other every other word for over two hours exhausting. i normally really enjoy cross-talk in movies, but it its use here felt artless. the courtroom scene where they had to talk to each other with real words at a reasonable volume was a breath of fresh air. i liked the vegas office confrontation too for the same reason. any time the the characters actually communicated with each other, verbally or otherwise, i was engaged. writing characters with limited vocabularies can work. welcome to the dollhouse (1995) does it + the constant vulgarity thing very well, imo. in it, you can feel the characters’ rawness and how they’re grasping at straws to express themselves through words that aren’t their own. anora’s dialogue made me feel like i was watching ‘the ultimatum’ in the worst way.

i did not care for vanya at all. i guess the point is for him to be this anti-prince charming, but he just felt like a waaasste of screen time. i don’t think chracters have to be likable to be enjoyable, but dude was a charisma vacuum for most of the movie. i would have liked less of him and more of anora and the goons doing fetch quests. i feel nuts reading all of the glowing reviews for this movie because, yeah, it was fine, but was it ~groundbreaking~? hell no. at least not to me. the cinematography was fine but very normal. i think it comes off cooler than it is because of how evocative the scenery of coney island is and bc it’s shot on film or whatever. the ending is sad (realistic, again), but is it, like, profound? i dunno, you guys. what is the appeal. what lens are you viewing this through that it illicits 4.5+ stars and a heart from you guys? because i want what you’re having!

shout out kev the ripper on youtube!! february 2000 abc broadcast with original promos + commercials is definitely the optimal viewing experience for this. i binge watched the mary tyler moore show last year when i messed up my back and i loved it so much that i just want to consume everything there is in the mary tyler television universe. i just finished watching rhoda yesterday and i already miss her character so much. anybody asking whether or not this special is “good” is missing the point. the point is that the band is back together. MARY AND RHODA BABY! exactly what it says on the tin!

mary is recently widowed and rhoda is divorced (twice if you count her spin off as canon): they’re both single gals in the big city, they both have daughters (named after each other), and they decide to start living together. no third act misunderstandings between them to distract from the love fest either! the conflict comes from their trials navigating the world as older women and their issues relating to their kids (who are their polar opposites, of course). they’re each other’s solace and it’s so sweet to watch. the pop rock version of the mary tyler moore theme was so perfectly on brand. i wish they had made this premise a mini series or something. i just want more of the girlies :’)

three stars because it’s my party and i’ll rate it how i want to!

this is definitely the type of movie to make a bunch of obtuse people start going “but what if the roles were reversed!” “if were a man doing the pursuing!–“. doris is a freak, not a creep. i cannot articulate the difference, but there is one.

incredibly uncomfortable viewing experience, but my take is that doris miller is cool as fuck and she can call me anytime. thank you 👍

stepford wives ‘75 is one of the most frustrating kind of adaptation: it gets so close, but it just doesn’t deliver on the feel of the original work. 

the intro the edition of the stepford wives that i read put a lot of emphasis on the story’s very deliberate pacing. it glides along like clockwork. the film nearly captures that ease? ambivalence? but interrupts the flow when it leaves joanna’s perspective. it does such a good job building up this eerie atmosphere and then deflates it by putting in a line that gives away too much too soon. katharine ross is perfect, but joanna’s character is tweaked in little ways that i feel make her eventual realization not hit as hard. it’s a lot of little things like that make the stepford wives just not work for me. death by a thousand papercuts. 

the visuals of the town of stepford also felt a little sloppy to me. i guess i just didn’t like the location. the eberhart house felt a little too old and a little too opulent. the character’s homes also felt a little bit too secluded from eachother, which sorta killed the feeling of suburban claustrophobia the film was trying to communicate. the men gave nothing. peter masterson as walter looks like if murray slaughter from mary tyler went on ozempic and isn’t at all interesting or charming enough to make me believe that joanna ever saw anything in him. but don’t let me be misunderstood: the stepford wives is leaps and bounds better of a watch then closet-adaptation don’t worry darling (2022). boy was that was some trash.

the description for this on tubi is really on something else. “indelible performances, lush locations, and sinister sensuality mark what may be the most faithful film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s vampire classic”— a faithful adaptation in the sense that it is truly, heart-rendingly BORING. weird asf in so many ways and none of them good. my least favorite change is probably lucy’s harem all getting frankenstein’d into “quincy”. shook me to my core, i loved him so much in the book :’(

color story was interesting though, i haven’t seen any other vampire movies that do blue-green-orange/brown-red as their color palette. maybe some of it was because film old, but i choose to read it as a Bold Aesthetic Choice. because boy howdy, does this film make some other Bold Aesthetic Choices. framing so many of the shots to make the furniture look really big and the characters really small, renfield’s bayang, and jonathan’s fugly brown suit are a few fine examples.

i noticed distinct lack of characters writing. this is my first dracula film adaptation (crazy one to start off with), so maybe this is par for the course, but i feel like most of the characters were defined by their writing in the book. nobody picks up a pen once, which is probably one of the reasons why this movie felt so voiceless. no aura, mid to poor draculadies, and no homoeroticism somehow. what are we even doing here.

my nine year old brother, a true i pad kid (cried once at the thought of watching a 40 minute christmas special), sat down of his own volition and watched this from almost the start to the end of the credits crawl. asked me if this movie was an “animation” and then how long it took to make. at the end, he asked when they would make a sequel :) that’s that takahata espresso

read the book this fall and was interested to see how adaptations would tackle everything. lots of thoughts in my head right now and i mighttt add to this review later (it’s 2:35 a.m. as i write this), but off the dome, ruth wilson was so cute in this. the 2000s bbc-isms in the cinematography were ridiculously out of place. i didn’t appreciate how they sanitized rochester’s character. he still sucks and sulks around like a loser, but his taunting and blatant freakiness are way too toned down. what should be the most pivotal part of the story suffers for it. despite a cumulative 3+ hour runtime, they barely ever included dialogue from the book. just, ignored the existence of some of charlotte brontë’s finest bars and replaced them with lines that did not capture the emotional intensity of the prose at all. the pride and prejudices have really spoiled me, i guess. there were a lot of little changes made throughout that detracted from jane’s character. they chickened out and cast an actor at least two degrees of conventional attractiveness too hot to play mr rochester. conversely, i don’t think the guy they got to play st. john was pretty enough, but hey, that’s show biz. overall, not bad though!

obviously white christmas is great, but irving berlin and i are not on speaking at the moment (i found out about holiday inn this morning) so -1 star. he knows what he did.

every time i turn on my samsung tv, it automatically loads up the 24/7 hallmark movie channel. i get dropped into some of the most fantastic scenes of all time featuring beach wave millennial women getting ready to return to their holiday themed small towns and pining after men who turn out to be the ones trying to bulldoze their nana’s bakery. the hallmark christmas movie is its own genre. it can be mistaken for a stale rom com, but it legitimately has its own rules and conventions, the same as slasher movies do, for example.

the hallmark movie deserves enough respect that we can talk about what makes a good one and what makes a bad one without devolving into just making fun of women or implying that they’re not worth giving thought to because they’re the movie equivalent of empty calories. their messaging is absorbed by millions (probably billions) of people, so actually it does matter when they romanticize bum behavior.

all the dudes in this movie are bums except tim medows but especially logan, who’s supposed to be the catch of the day. he wears a flannel over a hoodie instead of a jacket because he’s very #humble. him telling her, in their mid twenties, that wanting to take a job offer in england (hello rachel from friends) was her running away from her problems/him was audacious (just go with her!) but it was crazy that the narrative kinda made him right in the end. i was also disappointed by the way that the film used sophie. i wish the white dude had just broken up with avery after getting sloshed and realizing he had feelings for her instead of making him + sophie cheaters.

most of the hallmarkisms felt uninspired. you can feel the heart in the best hallmark channel orginals, but with netflix, you loose the spirit of the low budget ingenuity and the ion that comes from no name actors who are excited just to be on screen. it felt, just like that goofy time ing montage, very ai coded (“give me an overview of pop culture moments between 2014 and 2024”, copy, paste into script)

i loved  kristen chenowith’s performance. she definitely has the energy that the hallmark style needs. our little secret isn’t good, but the final reveal scene almost makes it feel like it was. it’s so entertaining that i’d say it’s worth watching on its own :p. i like that the parents seemed to work out ethical non monogamy during the time skip. that was a ballsy way to wrap up the affair plot thread.

“into the unknown” been realllll quiet since “beyond” showed up to the function.

deeply weird but also not weird enough. it seems like the son is in high school? a minor…? it doesn’t really matter whether or not the eponymous dad’s heart was in the right place or that he was just parroting his girlfriend, i’m pretty sure the sexting is a jail-able offense. get you put on a list type shit. i have no idea what i would do if i were the mom or the girlfriend. would i press charges? i really don’t know. i don’t know if there are legal consequences for incest between adults and i refuse to look it up and have that query in my search history. i get that it wasn’t freaky deaky on the dad’s part but that was so fucking coconuts.

i do have a begrudging respect for how incredibly uncomfortable and narsty this film was willing to be. way more unpalatable than i expected for a movie from the studio that made crush (2022) in the same year and followed that up with forming a school themed tiktok skit troupe. i’ve seen a total of three of their movies so far and this one is by far the best. the mental health focused parts of this film felt very dear evan hansen, but i love my dad has this insane, car wreck quality that deh didn’t dare sacrifice its marketability to try to achieve. genuinely this movie is ghoulish, i hate to see it, and it exceeded my expectations 💀

ranking the studio ghibli movies i’ve seen personally! based on a combination of uniqueness, appeal, and rewatchablity. they’re all great in different ways and hard to compare objectively, so consider most of them “tied for first” though (respectively), the late 80s-‘97 films are peak of the catalogue (sorry howl stans) in my opinion. the only films i haven’t seen are grave of the fireflies, earthsea chronicles, and the newest one!
