A slow-burn spiritual successor to Val Lewton’s classic psychological thrillers. (There’s one scene I would easily believe is a direct homage to the famous “Lewton bus” moment from Cat People.) The movie also looks really cool, and it’s refreshing to see a horror movie – or any movie, really – that takes place in Romania but isn’t about the usual gothic castles, vampires, etc.

Totally inconsequential side note: Our dog Minni is a rescue from the streets of Romania so I liked to imagine her scurrying about in the background of all the street scenes.
