Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlinale, Mati Diop’s Dahomey is a vital work of cinematic imagination. To celebrate the arrival of this prismatic hybrid documentary, the French filmmaker has curated a trio of dazzling shorts that spark a conversation with her spellbinding feature.

Check the notes to read Diop's thoughts on each of her selections in this list.

Now streaming (almost) globally.

  • Dahomey

Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlinale, Mati Diop’s dynamic film brings a dazzling sense of imagination to vital issues of self-determination and restitution. Amplifying voices from beyond the walls of international museums, this spellbinding work redefines the spaces of culture and art.

  • You Hide Me

“Shot at the British Museum in 1970, You Hide Me is the graduation film of a 26-year-old Ghanaian student. Watching this cinematic manifesto for the first time, I kept wondering how director Nii Kwate Owoo had managed to access the underground reserves of the museum––home to 70,000 African artefacts––knowing how strictly inaccessible they were. I myself would be refused access to those of the Quai Branly for the shooting of Dahomey, fifty years later. In fact, this is the film’s real tour de force: by keeping any negotiation off-screen, the filmmaker offers the spectator a space to speculate on the presence of these two Black bodies, both as real as a mirage. In the end, this cathartic performance acts on our unconscious, inviting us to transgress through the limited yet infinite channels of imagination.”

  • L'avance

“In the history of cinema, some films represent a turning point. For me, L’avance isn’t just a debut short film, but also ground zero for a new generation of Afro-descendants who are only now getting access to fields previously reserved for white people. It was in Paris, where he was born, that Djiby Kebe sketched this twenty-minute, hyper-lucid portrait of a young artist (modelled after himself) in an art world thirsty for young Black blood. A scene that particularly touched me is one in which the artist, Aliou, meets a neighborhood friend shooting a TikTok video, who asks him who he truly is. Aliou says he doesn’t know and that he will be searching for the answer for the rest of his life. L’avance marks the entry of the “Glissantien” anti-hero––named after the Martinican poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant––into contemporary French cinema."

  • Atlantiques

“Atlantiques is the first short film that I shot in Dakar. I filmed Serigne, a young man who has just been repatriated from Spain having braved the crossing from the Senegalese coast by boat. For the first time, he shared his epic journey with his two friends (Alpha and Cheikh, my cousin), who were trying hard to convince him to stay. But Serigne was already gone. Whatever the cost, he was determined to jump on a boat again. By the time I had chosen to displace my cinema from Paris to Dakar, an entire generation was escaping the country in the opposite direction (for Europe) by sea, where many of them perished. I understood much later that we were all under a spell that would not say its name.”

Stepping out of the celluloid closet, LGBTQ+ representations in cinema have become increasingly robust, diverse, and multidimensional. From intimate character studies to boldly experimental features, the eclecticism of queer cinema not only illuminates the richness of our collective human experience but also daringly subverts filmmaking conventions. Just like the delightfully broad spectrum of genders and sexualities, cinematic renderings of queer experiences are cultural mosaics that rise above attempts at classification and categorization. Reflecting this formal dynamism, our electric offering of LGBTQ+ cinema is a celebration of queer artistry and history, spotlighting urgent social issues and the sheer pleasure of unapologetic queer joy.

Adèle Exarchopoulos is a dynamite presence in contemporary cinema. Burning bright since an early age, the actor become the youngest winner ever of the Palme d’Or, in an incendiary moment in Cannes history. She continued to perform with fearless ion in the films that followed, drawing on deep wells of emotion to round out strikingly raw physicality. Fiercely talented, Exarchopoulos acts with such intensity that our screens start to feel flimsy when she appears: as if the line between fantasy and reality could, exhilaratingly, catch light at any moment.

In Love. The Cinema of Wong Kar Wai. 20837 https://letterboxd.telechargervous.com/mubi/list/in-love-the-cinema-of-wong-kar-wai/ letterboxd-list-21365536 Tue, 21 Dec 2021 05:27:05 +1300 <![CDATA[

Steeped in love, lust, and melancholy, the films of Wong Kar Wai are a true cinephile’s dream. One of the great contemporary filmmakers, Wong is a master at capturing the many forms of love and courtship: from budding desire and heady infatuation to delirious heartbreak. Wong’s woozy, non-linear visions of urban loneliness traverse the specifics of their time and place to capture our hunger as humans to connect. Yet they also offer indelible portraits of place, from a densely populated, globalized Hong Kong to a rough-and-ready bedsit in Buenos Aires. His atmospheric cinematic worlds—often brought to life by regular cinematographer Christopher Doyle—shimmer with boldly saturated colors, shake to electrifying soundtracks, and judder with skittish step-printed effects. Deeply influential, the innovative director has turned generations onto arthouse cinema and ignited the independent film scene in Hong Kong.

This program includes ravishing, brand-new restorations of his beloved classics, personally overseen by the director. Whether you’re falling in love for the first time or revisiting an old flame, get ready to have your heart broken.

David Lynch 6x6m12 A Surrealist Mastermind https://letterboxd.telechargervous.com/mubi/list/david-lynch-a-surrealist-mastermind/ letterboxd-list-20308801 Tue, 19 Oct 2021 11:15:10 +1300 <![CDATA[

It’s hard to think of another filmmaker as attuned to the avant-garde who has made such a substantial mainstream impact as David Lynch. So recognizably singular, yet defiant of categorization is his cinema that “Lynchian” has become a ubiquitous shorthand for anything that straddles the uncanny perimeters of dream and reality, resisting the marked boundaries of definition. A multidisciplinary artist whose work encomes everything from painting and sculpture to video installations and film, Lynch is a rare example of a filmmaker who has been exhibited in galleries, cinemas, online and on television, without compromising the integrity of his sui generis vision.

Lynch’s art, across multiple media, appears to manifest itself as an eruption of his subconscious. His feature films may flirt with traditional storytelling methods, such as plot and character development, but they’re invariably untethered, adrift in a slipstream of dream logic and psychological quicksand. The dozens of short films Lynch has made across his career testify to his tireless creative process. Some are simple sketches, others fully-formed miniatures, but all refuse to be wrangled by reductive interpretation. Fascinated by the darkness that lurks beyond the diaphanous, apple-pie facades of the American psyche, the alluring nightmares of David Lynch oscillate between beauty and chaos, collectively forming an ecstatic body of work unlike anything else in modern cinema.

This year’s Carrosse d’Or winner on his singularly uncompromising career.

By Michael Koresky

This interview, part of our Cannes 2025 coverage, was originally published in the Notebook Special, a limited-edition print publication distributed at the Cannes Film Festival.

One could be forgiven for feeling a bit wistful celebrating Todd Haynes’s extraordinary career in 2025. The 64-year-old American director is about to receive the Carrosse d’Or at the Directors’ Fortnight, the festival’s version of a lifetime achievement award, and it’s a reflective moment to honor an artist whose films, from the start, so provocatively confronted the evils of the times in which they were made. With epochal experiments like Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), Poison (1991), and Safe (1995), Haynes broke out against a backdrop of extreme crisis—the AIDS epidemic and the political iniquity carried out in its wake—and any consideration of his filmography remains inseparable from these sociopolitical realities.

Upon release, Poison became a central pawn in the “culture wars” of the early 1990s, held up by grandstanding conservative congressmen as evidence of the gay agenda they believed was being partly funded by the NEA. Now that federal dollars are being squashed at every turn, and anything with a whiff of radicalism is being tagged as treasonous, we might look back with fondness at the bravery of Haynes’s filmography, which came to prominence at a time when daring independent filmmakers were rigorously subverting the social order, not only in subject matter but also through the aesthetics of film itself. In the face of a newly emboldened authoritarianism at home and abroad, in which the scapegoating of queer people for political gain has become de rigueur, contemporary artists have yet to figure out how to respond.

It’s safe to say that Haynes’s daring and continual deconstruction of film form has continued unabated throughout his career, in projects of all shapes and sizes. It appears that he is congenitally unable to make a movie that doesn’t function on multiple intellectual levels at once, while maintaining a thrilling narrative ingenuity (his gutting May December, 2023, being only the most recent example). That’s entertainment, folks. Even as Haynes juggles projects that flirt with the mainstream, he has never yielded his dedication to questioning power structures and the systems that define and constrict us. For Haynes, cinema has always been and always will be the shadow version of reality, where there is meaning beyond and behind our first perception.

Amalia Ulman on Elaine May y5y3w In Praise of the Loser Brunette https://letterboxd.telechargervous.com/mubi/story/amalia-ulman-on-elaine-may-in-praise-of-the/ letterboxd-story-36610 Wed, 23 Apr 2025 03:53:06 +1200 <![CDATA[

To celebrate Elaine May’s birthday, a personal reflection from MAGIC FARM filmmaker Amalia Ulman on choosing to invest one’s intelligence in something other than seduction.

By Amalia Ulman

I have been dreading writing this essay because it means itting to myself and to the world something very unfortunate: I am a loser brunette.

It was 2017, and my then husband suggested we watch A New Leaf (1971) because there was a new Blu-ray restoration, which was exciting. But as I watched Walter Matthau as Henry Graham arrogantly reckoning with the fact that he had run out of money, making teary-eyed farewell visits to his Upper East Side tailor and racket club, I thought of the man sitting next to me and was shocked by the similarities. “He’s just like you,” I said to my husband, who likewise maintained emotional relationships with the institutions that validated his sense of sophistication. Surprisingly, he didn’t bother denying it, just agreed and chuckled. The nerve! I guess it was too late in the game to pretend otherwise. I was already drowning in debt after ing his life of leisure for years. As I watched the rest of the film, I wondered how I had managed to get swindled so badly. The nerve! My then husband regarded his appreciation for the finest of things as a sort of talent, which he applied to correcting my feral ways, just as Henry cleans Henrietta of crumbs each morning before going to work at the university. And just like Henrietta (Elaine May herself), or like Lila Kolodny (her daughter, Jeannie Berlin) in The Heartbreak Kid (1972), I thought those corrections were a sign of care. I know better now, but my affinity for Elaine May’s sweet but tragic, nerdy characters has remained.

The naturalistic tenderness of these women’s loserdom tells me that they were written by a woman, very possibly from her own lived experience. May’s characters are brainy, vivacious, funny, and good-looking, but for some reason they can’t really fit in. Men are cruel to them because they’re too smart for their own good. Too intense, too enthusiastic, too assertive, too clumsy, too much. It’s the same reason I love Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Elaine on Seinfeld (1989–98). On paper, she’s an attractive woman with a good sense of humor. In reality, she’s a weirdo who’s bad at dancing, an opinionated feminist who can’t keep her mouth shut, and most importantly, a woman who is too comfortable with her sexuality to be sexually enticing to the men around her.

With Antony Balch, the Beat novelist applied his Surrealist writing method to the moving image.

By Mark Asch

Luca Guadagnino’s Queer is now showing on MUBI in many countries.

Anyone visiting William S. Burroughs in Paris while he edited his third novel would have found a scene closer to a bustling film-production office than a lonely writer’s retreat, with a storyboard on the wall and several collaborators beetling away. Burroughs composed Naked Lunch as a series of loosely related, nonchronological “routines”; the story was found in the edit as he rearranged these pieces into their final order. He had the help of friends such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and the painter and poet Brion Gysin, who later recalled, “The raw material of Naked Lunch overwhelmed us. [...] Burroughs was more intent on Scotch-taping his photos together into one great continuum on the wall where scenes faded and slipped into one another than occupied with editing the manuscript.”1

Gysin—having accidentally discovered what he and Burroughs would come to call the “cut-up” method when slicing through the old newspapers protecting a countertop workspace and becoming intrigued by the juxtaposition of scraps of stories from different editions—was by now applying a similar technique to audiotape recordings. With Gysin’s inspiration and collaboration Burroughs would develop variations on cut-ups across the 1960s, particularly in the novels The Soft MachineThe Ticket That Exploded, and Nova Express, using techniques such as slicing pages into quadrants and rearranging them like tangrams, or folding a page lengthwise and placing it atop another with the lines of text aligned. The composite page, featuring prose from earlier or later in the book, could then be inserted anywhere in the manuscript, simultaneously flashback and flash-forward. “Any narrative age or any age of poetic images is subject to any number of variations, all of which may be interesting and valid in their own right,” according to Burroughs, whose approach to prose in this period bears some resemblance to Soviet theories of montage, in which modular units of meaning are arranged and rearranged. “Cut-ups establish new connections between images.”2 The physical labor of the cut-ups, often involving cutting with a blade and resplicing with tape, is also analogous to analog film editing.

Burroughs backed into filmmaking, developing a cinematic method for the production of prose works, and only later applying it to the production of actual moving images. In 1960, he met Antony Balch, a British expat in Paris, a colorful figure frequently described by his acquaintances as “camp.” Balch had been interested in filmmaking and film exhibition from an early age, projecting his work in the family living room as a child and selling tickets to his own parents. He was working in commercials and subtitling when he fell into Gysin’s orbit.3 Balch and Burroughs collaborated on a handful of films informed by Burroughs’s prose experiments; that the cut-up method was essentially cinematic is borne out by the fact that the Burroughs–Balch films fit so snugly within an experimental filmmaking zeitgeist characterized by collage and lysergic imagery. As well, Towers Open Fire (1963) and The Cut-Ups (1966), especially, align with other movements percolating in the artistic underground of the 1960s: revolutionary politics, sexual permissiveness, and esoteric spiritual and pharmaceutical practices. The cut-up films are liberatory in their implications, tuned into invisible currents. Per Burroughs: “Cut-ups put you in touch with something you know but don’t know that you know.”4

Doors of Perception 5p6w1u Cinematic Sensations as Attractions https://letterboxd.telechargervous.com/mubi/story/doors-of-perception-cinematic-sensations/ letterboxd-story-34901 Thu, 20 Mar 2025 05:13:03 +1300 <![CDATA[

A cinema of taste, smell, and touch has been a recurrent fantasy of modernity, for both commercial artists and the avant-garde.

By Tom Gunning

Are You Experienced?” is the spring 2025 edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.

Why was cinema invented? Screenwriting manuals and certain film theorists have a ready answer: to tell stories in a dynamic modern form. This answer avoids the thorny thicket of film’s origins. As my friend and colleague André Gaudreault established, at the end of the nineteenth century the new technology of moving images did not have a single, dominant purpose; rather, it was employed in a diverse variety of what he calls “cultural series,” such as photographic exhibitions, journalistic reports, and magic shows.1 Theorist of technology Gilbert Simondon reminds us that technology continually reinvents and redefines its uses.2 Initially, moving photographic images supplied a precision tool that could record bodies in motion, allowing careful scientific analysis (the chronophotography of Étienne-Jules Marey, Eadweard Muybridge, and others). But moving images soon emerged from the physiological laboratory and were proclaimed as the latest innovation in photography, the logical next step after the snapshot, which froze action, often in ungainly postures. Now, photos could move…

The early machinery of moving images became an attraction in itself: Edison’s Kinetoscope and Biograph’s Mutoscope were single-viewer peepshow devices installed in arcades, often coin-operated and showing risqué films. In addition to aiding scientific inquiry and providing sexual stimulation, early films made current events come alive: Newly elected presidents, diplomatic visits by world leaders, and sporting events appeared on the screen as a living newspaper. Film offered stage magician Georges Méliès a new way to create visual magic through in-camera techniques and by splicing the film strip, which would make objects and people magically appear, disappear, or transform. ments for Dewar’s Whiskey or the latest brand of bicycle were projected onto billboards in New York City and other metropolises. Some of the earliest films also told stories: brief gags featuring young boys’ mischief with garden hoses (most famously, the Lumières’ L’Arroseur arrosé, 1895) or explosions caused by pouring kerosene in the kitchen stove, which blasted an astonished maid into heaven (as in George Albert Smith’s Mary Jane’s Mishap, 1903). Such stories—rather than developing characters or situations—are delivered more like a joke, with a sudden visual punch line.

Decades later, historians stressed two aspects of the first films: their “realism,” and what theorist Christian Metz called a natural drive toward storytelling, which destined the new medium to become the twentieth century’s dominant vehicle for narrative.3 The realistic effect of seeing people and animals and vehicles in motion was celebrated by film’s first commentators as well: “This is life itself,” one critic responded to the Lumières’ first projections. But the desire to use cinema to tell stories as we usually understand them, creating characters living in a fictional world, came later. Rather than seeing cinema as inevitably taking the royal road to narrative, Gaudreault and I hold that the first movies were less interested in telling stories than in grabbing the viewer’s attention with what we call “attractions.”4 By 1906 or so, narrative dominated commercial filmmaking (although ments, educational films, porno, musical numbers, and crazy cartoons coexisted alongside fictional feature films as “added attractions,” they were relegated to the beginning of film programs and sometimes driven underground). Cinema never abandoned its primal mission of addressing its viewer through new technological means, folding attractions into storytelling to create the “movies” as we know them. As much as narrative, it was the sensual address of attractions that made the movies internationally popular, while cinema’s inherent visual fascination—its direct address to our senses—also created a radical cinematic avant-garde.

Actors need to touch things.

By Elena GorfinkelJohn David Rhodes

From The Prop, by Elena Gorfinkel and John David Rhodes, published by Fordham University Press, the first in its Cutaways series of small-format books guided by a single motif or formal device.

Beth is a beleaguered young lawyer who drives four hours away from her regular job to teach education law in a small town called Belfry, Montana. In a scene set in a diner, Jamie, with no food of her own to distract her, watches as Beth eats a meal of burger and fries. Jamie, played by Lily Gladstone, is a ranch hand who has shown up for Beth’s evening class. Beth, played by Kristen Stewart, in this seemingly throwaway moment, performs a bit of prop-business both subtle and disarming in neo-neo-realist filmmaker Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women (2016). The scene begins with Beth having already sliced her burger in half. Beth takes a bite, then picks up what food-service workers sometimes call a “roll-up,” or what patrons of a diner like this might call a “place setting”: flatware tightly wrapped inside a paper napkin. Beth clearly must have already withdrawn the knife from the napkin in order to cut the burger, but she goes on to do something that is both prosaic and bizarre: She uses the roll-up as if it were an unfolded napkin. She presses the napkin, which still contains spoon and fork, to dab daintily the corner of her mouth. This prop—the roll-up—is quotidian, familiar, banal—something found in any greasy spoon. This tiny but arresting gesture is repeated a few moments later, as Beth chews, talks, and explains the duress of her long commute. Jamie, we begin to realize, is smitten with Beth. In her handling of this ordinary object, Stewart (as Beth) makes conspicuous this prop via what seems to be an improvisational gesture. The roll-up announces the modest customs of middle-American foodways and allows the opportunity for the performer to articulate something about the character she plays. Beth must make haste; she needs to keep moving, and her impatience is communicated through her strange handling of what would otherwise be a generic, forgettable prop, something that might ordinarily escape notice entirely. Beth cannot entertain Jamie’s offer of friendship to her momentary companion. The tightly bound confection of paper napkin and industrial flatware stands in for the emotional tenor of this nascent relationship between two strangers. What pressures—temporal, psychic, material— make unrolling a napkin and using it appropriately a seemingly impossible task? This minor scene is emblematic of Vsevolod Pudovkin’s notion of the “expressive object.” Stewart’s fugitive moments of prop play offer deeper insight into Beth’s character, as well as into Stewart’s peculiarly diffident, slouchy performance style. Pudovkin insists on the power of inanimate objects in the cinema when he argues that “an object, linked to an actor, can bring shades of his state of emotion to external expression so deeply as no gesture or mimicry could ever express them conditionally.”1 Undemonstrative and mundane, the roll-up—this tightly wrapped bundle of serviceware—unwraps a view of film performance’s entwinement with the cinematic prop’s necessity.

The relationship of props to the embodied performer, the integral role they play in the gestural labor of the actor, is threaded through our entire discussion, but it is worthwhile here to tease out the investments and entrenched relations between performance and prop value. Cinema’s foundational fascination with bodily movement entails a frequent lingering on the prop and the role of objects; this preoccupation is noticeable across the history of cinema, from pre-cinematic motion studies and early cinema’s development as a narrational medium, all the way through actor training exercises in various schools of performance, including The Method and its multiple tributaries and variants. In numerous attempts to for the essence of cinema, theorists suggest that the capture of corporeal movement entails a grappling with things that is central to the prop’s circulation through the diegesis, and thus to the unfolding of the diegesis itself. As plot vector, currency, relational mediator, agent of memory, appendage or illuminator of character, and dramatic catalyst, the prop buttresses and expands the very energies of cinematic narration and the articulation of character. The hands that hold and grab props set fields of activity in motion and generate horizons of narrativity. The prop’s status as an expressive resource is bound up with the performer’s bodily activity. In his of film acting, James Naremore suggests that “actors need to touch things” by necessity, and this necessity of handling the prop world is a vital means of producing screen presence, key to the construction of a coherent fictional self. He further notes that “part of the actor’s job is to keep objects under expressive control, letting them become signifiers of feeling.”2 Concerned with how the border between prop and performer breaks down or becomes porous, Naremore points to elements of screen performances, from Charlie Chaplin’s cane to Barbara Stanwyck’s subtly wielded handkerchief in the tearful ending of Stella Dallas (King Vidor, 1937), as examples of how acting techniques extend from an intensified relation between prop and character. In their different generic s Chaplin’s comedic hyperbole and Stanwyck’s melodramatic realism demonstrate how prop work generates the gestural flow between action and expression.

A conversation between friends, the Chinese documentarian and the Korean critic, in English for the first time.

By Jung Sung-ilJawni Han

We are pleased to present this conversation between Wang Bing and Jung Sung-il in English for the first time, translated and introduced by Jawni Han.

After the fall of the military dictatorship in South Korea in 1988, the country entered a period of wholesale political, social, and cultural transformation. At the heart of its newly blooming cinephile culture was Jung Sung-il, who remains one of Korea’s most prominent film critics. Jung founded the generation-defining film journal KINO in 1995, known for erudite film criticism that drew influence from Lacanian psychoanalysis, critical theory, French philosophy, and the writings of Shiguéhiko Hasumi. On the occasion of the journal’s seventh anniversary, Bong Joon-ho, one of its most avid readers, contributed a Se7en-inspired comic strip.

Jung’s first encounter with Wang Bing was at the 2003 International Film Festival Rotterdam, where the nine-hour cut of Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks premiered. He came out of the screening a new convert. In the inaugural issue of Nang, Jung praised the lengthy shots taken from a moving freight train that bookend the film:

In the current century ... we are witnessing a second beginning of cinema—this time on the other side of the world. I think of Wang Bing as the Lumières and Apichatpong Weerasethakul as Méliès.

Since then, Jung has consistently championed Wang’s work, and the two have struck up a friendship. In 2009, Jung ed Wang in Yunnan Province, where the director was making Three Sisters (2012) and ’Til Madness Do Us Part (2013) at the same time. Jung’s own documentary Night and Fog in Zona (2015) documents Wang at work, the film’s form often mirroring the meditative style of its subject; at 235 minutes long, it is close in length to Wang’s 228-minute Madness. Reflecting on what he learned from Wang, Jung remarks: “Not the question of what to shoot, but of what not to shoot and when to stop shooting and leave the location.”

The following is Jung’s most recent interview with Wang, conducted at the Busan International Film Festival in 2022. Initially published in the Korean film magazine FILO, it is also the concluding chapter of Jung’s new book on the director, My Auteurism (2024). Jung maintains that an interview is the highest form of criticism; a director’s insights often withstand the test of time in a way that most prose reviews cannot. Their discussion revolves around Wang’s monumental 485-minute Dead Souls (2018). In 2005, Wang began interviewing the survivors of Jiabiangou Labor Camp in northwestern China, where those branded as “Rightists” were interned during the Great Leap Forward in the 1950s. Over the next few years, he recorded testimonials from 120 people, accumulating nearly 600 hours of footage. Jung writes elsewhere in his book that Dead Souls, one of four Wang films to engage with the history of Jiabiangou, bears witness to “history made of flesh and blood.”

The interview was conducted with an interpreter, and Wang's responses in Mandarin were translated into Korean for print publication. This is the first time the text has appeared in English.

Reflections on the adolescent drive to seek out graphic imagery, from early-’00s shock sites to the films of the New French Extremity.

By Philippa Snow

This piece was originally published in Issue 6 of Notebook magazine as part of a broader exploration of the cinema of youth. The magazine is available via direct subscription or in select stores around the world.

The first time I watched somebody die—really die—on film, I would have been about fourteen, surfing the web on the clunky, Frankensteinian experiment of a desktop computer that my father, an IT guy, had made for me out of spare parts he had harvested from work. I can’t how I first came across a recording of the former Pennsylvania Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer taking his own life on television in 1987, but I do with surprising clarity exactly how I felt in the immediate aftermath of watching him, in the middle of a live press conference, put a bullet through his brain. I felt that something irreversible had happened: that there had been a moment in which I was still a person who had never watched a man die, and then, bam, another moment in the wake of it in which I had become somebody else.

In 2022, I published a book about the use of self-inflicted injury in art and entertainment, and the conversations that I had with fellow-millennial readers at promotional events often turned to the website Rotten.com—a shock site whose stock in trade was violent videos, crime-scene images, hideous medical photography, and miscellaneous (sometimes mocked-up) gore, and which was one of several places that hosted the video of Dwyer.1 The site, which was created in 1996 by a pseudonymous web developer going by “Soylent,” functioned like an electronic game of chicken: its front page, a sparse white design studded with no-nonsense hyperlinks with titles like “Meat Grinder II” and “Celebrity Morgue,” alongside a brief, provocative content description, dared s to click through.2 There has always been a market for depictions of the violent and grotesque; the tape of Dwyer’s suicide re-aired on several news stations on the day he died, and it has been digitized and recirculated endlessly since. The advent of the internet, however, made finding such material child’s play, and for a time in the late ’90s and the early 2000s—before many parents had wised up to the existence of auto-censoring filters—it also made seeking it out a popular adolescent hobby. Still, nobody I talked to about Rotten.com during that promotional cycle could explain exactly why they browsed the site in their teens. Was it curiosity? A desire for catharsis? An attempt at psychological self-harm? Perhaps they were all seeking the same sense of horrible transformation I experienced when watching that video of Dwyer—hoping to propel themselves over the line into adulthood, leaving childhood innocence behind. Sickness, death, injury, cruelty: These were things we had been told to expect from adult life, and the ability to look directly at them without flinching could be seen as proof of our burgeoning maturity.

Then again, perhaps the sick, cheap thrill of it all was enough. Red Rooms (2023), an intelligently spooky film by the Canadian director Pascal Plante, interrogates the impetus to look at extreme content on the web without ever settling on an explanation as to why we feel the urge to do so. It is nominally a thriller but is far more intriguing when viewed as a character study of a woman who appears to have no character at all. Our “heroine” Kelly-Anne, a statuesque and blank-faced professional model, is attending the weeks-long trial of an alleged child-killer and online snuff-pornographer named Ludovic Chevalier, sleeping outside the courtroom to ensure herself a prime seat for the action. “Asking human beings to watch these kinds of videos,” the prosecutor says of the evidence she has assessed, “is inflicting something on them.” About halfway through the film, we learn that Kelly-Anne has chosen to inflict this horror on herself: Having obtained two of the videos in question on the dark web, she has watched them enough times to have memorized the action.
