The Matrix Resurrections

2021

Aghhhhhh, so close. Resurrections comes flying out of the blocks with so many big ideas, taking huge swings at tackling the expectations of a blockbuster sequel through its own mega-commentary. Lana’s attempts alone are commendable and powerful in of itself, but just like that one other movie out in cinemas right now, the plot seems like it exists because a film just had to be made, rather than the other way around.

There are parts of this that work extremely well. Its central focus on the romance between Neo and Trinity is genuinely really sweet and proves to be the driving force of the final act. Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Jessica Henwick are both great fits in to the universe, but feel under-utilised, as does Jonathan Geoff’s Smith.

One of the main let-downs for me, though, was just how much the frequent flashbacks to the originals highlighted their amazing visual style that, other than in the dingy out-of-matrix scenes which looked great, really wasn’t present in the rest of the film.
