Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

β˜…β˜… Rewatched

Every time I watch this film, I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that we went from The Final Chapter to this, but alas, I throw every bit of my sanity out the window to enjoy this one. If ever reimagined, I think the topics of mental illness would be deeply explored, but the 80’s had a rough go creating a visual representation through a slasher lens.

In a world of disappointments, Dean DeBlois’ live action adaption of How To Train Your Dragon is the gold standard. The franchise’s complexity shines, bringing a different light to an already fantastic film, while also hitting every beat you’d want from its predecessor. One of my favorite additions to the franchise, Joseph Zito’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter delivers some of the best writing, directing, and acting of the bunch. The improvement is undeniable, reviving the series the following year.

Opening scenes in horror films have a lot to prove, trying to shock an unshakable audience. This opener takes the cake as one of my favorites. The idea of Jason’s body reanimating in a morgue is esthetically…

Friday the 13th Part III

Steve Miner’s follow up to his previous direction of Friday the 13 Part II came with Part III, a film that’s nostalgia trumps its substance, but is an enjoyable ride. Not being able to elaborate on Ginny’s story is a bummer, because I think she delivers one of the strongest final girl performances of the franchise, but Chris’ narrative serves as a bandage for the absence.

The opening sequence, post recap, is a great start to the film, amping up…
