Sorry, Baby

2025

★★★★ 1

Absolutely loved Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby.
Such assured confidence for a debut feature. Right out the gate Victor establishes herself as an exciting triple threat; writer, actor and director. She tows a fine line between hilarious and devastating. But there’s lovely ing work from Naomi Ackie, Lucas Hedges and John Caroll Lynch. Prepare to be charmed - it’s a real winner.

Sentimental Value

2025

★★★★½ Watched

Sentimental Value is another home run for Joachim Trier and easily the best film in competition in Cannes (for me anyway). Trier marries heavy themes of pain, abandonment and daddy issues with humour and sincerity. The acting all around is remarkable. Renate is wonderful. Skarsgård has never been better. Elle Fanning sparkles. And Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas manages to stand out against such established names.
Expect it to be a player come awards season.

The Brutalist

2024

★★★★½ Watched

Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist is a triumph. A sprawling and heartfelt epic about the immigrant experience. I’m in awe of the ambition, scope and ion that Corbett brings to the screen. One of those films which is an absolute showcase of excellence in every dept; direction, score, cinematography, performances. Adrien Brody is a serious contender in the Best Actor race. Guy Pearce is a standout too.
While the second half isn’t as strong as the first, it is still a glorious cinematic accomplishment.

Megalopolis

2024

I am lost for words with Megalopolis. If Coppola is happy with it then I guess that’s something? 🤨🤷🏼‍♂️
I left it feeling totally discombobulated and bewildered by it. How does a 120M movie look this cheap?
I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to review this film cause I’m not even sure if I could tell you what the plot is.
I feel like I need a week of digestion before I could attempt to discuss it.
I’d say…
