The Man Who Played God

I’ve never been able to get through George Arliss’ Oscar winning turn in “Disraeli” - the performance is so from another time.  But here I loved him. His old fashion essence fits the character well. The grand celebrity pianist. The bitter suicidal invalid. The voyeur who plays God. Such an odd midpoint turn. The second half gets very weird, melodramatic and quite touching. Plus terrific early turns from Bette Davis and Ray Milland. Remade with Liberace (!?) as “Sincerely Yours” - actually perfect casting, now I have to watch that one!

Surprised how much I liked this one. Great performance by Marine Vacth as the title character who slides into becoming a call girl during her teenage years. It’s a little cold, a little Skinemax… but it’s always compelling and it never becomes a standard cautionary tale.  It’s Ozon so of course it looks amazing.  Plus you get M83 and Francois Hardy on the soundtrack… And a late appearance by the most beautiful woman ever Charlotte Rampling.
