Gloriously ambitious and probably one of the most subversive big-budget blockbusters we've seen from a major studio. Wrestles with the legacy and reputation of itself while also delivering on the true reason the first film succeeded as the masterpiece it is — underneath the leather, bullet time, even the questioning of reality, is a pure, universal story of love. The Wachowskis always go for it, and Lana, in her first film outing without Lilly, is bursting with ideas here. The layers are almost overwhelming on this first watch, and I'm not sure if I entirely grasped everything as it was happening, but this will certainly be rewarding on a rewatch. Lana Wachowski is one of our most thoughtful action directors working today and I'm thrilled to see that she hasn't missed a beat.
