one of the greatest and most harrowing entries in the genre of nun cinema -- ashamed i put off watching it for this long (jacques rivette + anna karina + nuns are my top 3 interests and yet!) and even more depressing than i had expected. brilliant in showing how society, human flaw, and the institution of religion -- not God himself, whom she genuinely worships -- created the trappings of her miserable, dead-end predicament.
Staggering nightmares of physical and then mental cruelty - everything is a cage. At first it seems a big Mizoguchi homage - but in its second half it is SO a Rivette picture with it's mental games and battles - laws of seduction and manipulation. What's astonishing here is that JR manages to encapsulate all of this without once leaving the period setting - that is to say, it is investigative about a forgotten aspect of French history while just being.....a Jacques Rivette movie. It locks us into Karina/Suzanne's POV, never once letting us know anything outside of that. We wonder & and struggle to understand just as she does - yet at the same time there is nothing contemporary about this movie. That's amazing to me.
Fate sure is something.
The Nun probably is one of my favourite drama flicks set in a period before the 19th century. A movie that tells a really deep and moving story of a woman who is forced and manipulated against her will to a religious order, constantly looking for some sort of closure or a sense of belonging and comfort but keeps getting the opposite in return.

Staggering—I quite literally staggered out of the theater. The manic, unquenchable desire for freedom—specifically, woman's freedom—but the terror in not being able to articulate what that freedom looks like—and, more existentially, having one's words fall to deaf ears in one's own time. It's a totally crazy, unpredictable pas de deux between director Jacques Rivette (ritualized, static and stuttering, a boxer-in, a sadistic, torturing Old Testament God of the highest ascetic order) and actor Anna Karina (as uncompromising as Dreyer's Gertrud but not all-knowing, hemmed in, uncomfortable in the too-drab cells of convents, she transforms into Lillian Gish to claw her way out to plein air, any open air).
If I was mother superior and one of the sisters was Anna Karina I would also go crazy with lust. Nun movies truly give me that buzz! This was stunning visually and the contrast between nunneries was hilarious to me. She went from living in a women’s prison to a hippie commune
What a tough ordeal do deal with an order
This really has some harsh criticisms with the religious order on the front of female self autonomy in a religion that really strips women from there self narrative but hell let's face it so was society in equal measure at that time.
So we have Suzanne(Anna Karina) who is religious but doesn't want to enter the vocation yet is forced by her family due to not being able to give a dowry(but really is due to her mothers infidelity that she considers her reminding sin and hide her shame). She is pushed around and hated but is given to another convent only to find love but not the kind she wants…
Well, I don't know who is more disappointed, me or you guys.
I recall seeing a lot of people here praising this film, which prompted me to finally watch it. And what else can I say? Performance- and technically-speaking, it's excellent. Anna Karina and the rest of the actors, especially those who are susceptible to repression, do an amazing job delivering on the psychological deterioration of their characters, and the juxtaposition of that with the beautiful, almost primeval cinematography creates a remarkable sort of dichotomy. The film's minimal score complements the film's psychological and occasionally modernistic tone quite nicely.
But the story just didn't measure up. Perhaps it didn't help that, before to seeing this film, I watched Novitiate and…
