Wow. I never thought I would be this moved by a bunch of animated clay figures. This is Adam Elliot's labour of love and he manages to excel in just about every department imaginable. Animation, design, music, language, all are outstanding, but what stands head and shoulders above everything else is the story and the characters that inhabit it.

Make no mistake, as cute and heartwarming as it eventually, there is a dark undertone to it approached with a pitch black and bleak sense of humour. This is essentially about isolation, not fitting in and about the shallowness of judging by covers only. To exist is the most difficult thing. To merely live is itself a burden. We all move through a universe of our own pain and fears. Mary and Max hits so many of the most difficult parts of reality. It articulates what cannot always be articulated, because animation allows expression that live action cannot. This is a film of pure beauty, within its soul. On the outside it has a textured animated appearance that is deliberately crude. It makes mundane pain into something unique, and that is truly beautiful.

While the story has its lighthearted moments and a lot of dark humor to entertain, I was surprised by how touching it can be at times. Seeing these two very distinct people connect and just fill each other’s loneliness was quite involving. Adam Elliot creates a story that truly comes from the heart, having a peculiar and charming stop-motion animation to bring that to life. Also, the voice work here is excellent, especially by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman who always used to be extremely committed to his roles. He captures Max’s frustrations, melancholy and morbid sense of humor in a very heartfelt manner. I wasn’t expecting to have such an emotionally draining experience with Mary and Max, but it moved me like few other animated films have.

I laugh when i that i first watched this movie in a class. My teacher was wild for putting 8th-graders to watch this. WE ENDED THE MOVIE SOBBING, WE GOT DEPRESSED.
