The washed-out, monochrome video of the footage is no doubt a reflection of Seyrig and her modest crew assembling this in their off time with minimal resource (the movie looks like some of the old hard-cam recordings of performances at New Jersey's Capitol Theatre), but the practical reasons have an artful side, the surveillance-cam-esque images magnifying how clandestine the actresses' confessions to Seyrig feel.
So many times in this you can actually see how much Seyrig's questions catch them off-guard, not because they are "gotchas" but because it is painfully obvious that no one has ever asked them such meaningful, empathetic questions about their work. Scrappy and seething. I loved it. These conversations don't at all feel like they're from decades ago. Dispiriting that so little has changed for women in the industry in 40+ years. My only critique really is that almost all the women interviewed are white (expect Maidie Norman) and would have been nice to have a few more stars like Diahann Carroll or Ruby Dee or Cecily Tyson interviewed as well.
This is terribly edited! The French director plays her translation over the audio of the actors speaking and it's so confusing. I had to watch it on mute and just read the subtitles.
Otherwise, it's fascinating watching a pantheon of amazing female actors describing their experiences and casually smoking cigarettes. It's reflective of 2nd wave feminism and highlights the concerns and battles of that time. It also feels like Hollywood still hasn't learnt the lessons from all this time ago.
Too many perfect moments but Fonda left me in pieces.
“A mother or a whore”
Jane Fonda speaking french and dropping very smart statements about feminism was quite an interesting watch. There were times during this where I couldn't stop listening as what was being said was something that is being discussed frequently nowadays, making this documentary quite adequate for the times we live in, concerning social differences.
Although it was badly filmed with no sense of aesthetic or cinematic quality, it did what it set out to do.
