After Life

1998

★★★★ Liked

Despite some annoyance with the pacing — it is a very plodding experience at times — the premise of having to boil what you bring into the afterlife with you down to a single memory, and seeing the deceased try to grapple with such a high-stakes requirement, is wonderfully moving. Such a bureaucratic heaven could make for a hostile, cold environment to set a story in, however the film only ever feels tender and comionate.
It’s somehow a (perhaps exceedingly human) comfort to know that existential doubts can reach even our ghosts, and can give them pause, despite all of their wisdom.
