Dave A’s review published on Letterboxd:
I rewatched this one because I watching it for the first time years ago, and it scaring the piss out of me.
I have obviously toughened up a bit since, because I didn't find it nearly so scary this time, but still not a bad movie.
The setup was pretty good, although the did they/didn't they adultery storyline was never really revisited.
I kind of liked how you get drawn into the dangers of the caves themselves, making the appearance of the 'crawlers' themselves all the more effective when it happens. Probably waited a bit too long to introduce them, meaning that our heroine had to make the transition into a double tough psycho a bit too quickly for my liking.
Usually I want some sort of happy ending, but I must say I fucking love the ending to this movie. Utter despair, after hitting us with one of the more effective dream sequences I've seen.
SCORES:
Characters: A good mix of characters, with the lead set up in a pretty harrowing opening few minutes. Her arc was a bit rushed in the end, but her final act of retribution was badass enough to make up for it 8/10
Rewatchability: This was already my second time and I imagine I'll be back again before long 7/10
Action: Could have done with some crawler action literally only a few minutes earlier. I found myself checking how long was left shortly before they turned up 6/10
Insider appeal: Atmospheric and intense enough to hold the interest of most horror fans, I'd say. The gore scenes were a bit dimly lit (by design, obviously), which may disappoint the more bloodthirsty among you 7/10
General appeal: Tough sell to anyone remotely claustrophobic but if non-genre fans can forgive a small handful of jump scares, there's still a pretty good drama lurking underneath 6/10
Overall 34/50 or 3.4/5
