Had to see what all the fuss was about...and yes, this is indeed VERY good. Really delivers on the spectacle when it matters most. The sheer scale and magnitude of Godzilla was astounding. I felt a pit in my stomach every time he (she? it?) showed up, leading me to the realization that I was legitimately AFRAID of this fictional creature. Godzilla has always been a metaphor for war (or more specifically, for the destructive power of the bomb), but never before has this metaphor been more vivid and haunting. This story in particular also focuses on a fascinating part of Japan's past: the kamikaze pilot. It adds an incredible amount of dimension to our main character and to the human story of the film, which was occasionally dry but never outright "boring."
LOVED that two-hour runtime too. That's the sweet spot. Perhaps it could have been edited a lil' bit tighter, as I felt it whenever Zilla wasn't on screen, but that's me nitpicking. A Godzilla film made me legitimately afraid and emotional - can't I just be happy!? :)
