This is like a gem that was just waiting for me to find it. Joanna Hogg could teach a masterclass on crafting and shooting an effective ghost story that trusts its audience doesn't need, or want to be spoon-fed. When someone says "they sure don't make 'em like they used to," point them here. And Tilda Swinton continues to be amazing. More of these, please!

I'm choosing to revisit this before diving into the Halloweenies podcast episode, because of all the classic Universal Monster movies, I'm the least familiar with Phantom of the Opera. Which is odd, since I've actually read the novel (many years ago), and seen so many other versions and variations.

Godzilla Minus One

I'm not really a Godzilla guy, apart from a cultural appreciation, and I'm kind of envious for those who will be enjoying the Godzilla fest happening at the Music Box Theater this month. But maybe the tides have turned. I didn't realize it could be possible for me to be this invested in a Godzilla movie. I really loved this. Like, whoa. If this team is involved in the future of Godzilla flicks, I'll be there opening weekends.

Superman

Of the handful of movies that can dismantle my cynicism, Superman is near the top, and I urgently need that right now. The older I get, the more I'm aware of its imperfections and its age (as it goes in life), but I don't love it any less.
