I think in this film’s case, the move of killing your protagonist and switching gears halfway through really works against it. After the momentary surprise and drama of the scene itself wears off, the second half and its main characters feel way less compelling imo.
I’d give the first half four stars and the second half three, so giving it a 3.5 overall

Mmm yeah ultimately I can’t say I think this was very good. I do think sometimes “that character was acting stupid, and it didn’t make sense that they would” is an overused criticism- after all, sometimes people do just make unbelievably dumb decisions. That being said, I think it’s a fair criticism here, especially when not just one or two plot beats but the entire premise hinges on the main characters seeming to have just absolutely no sense of self…
I’ve been playing Ace Attorney with my mom and about halfway through watching this she turned to me and said about Josh Hartnett’s character: “I hate to say it. But that’s what Phoenix Wright’s hair would look like in real life.” And I can’t stop thinking about that now

1) in order to keep the stakes high, at most one truck is going to make it
And
2) The truck that…
I didn’t realize just how direct of a remake The Birdcage was, down to having a lot of the exact same jokes delivered in almost the same ways. Even so, I also do feel like The Birdcage is a significantly better film. Though honestly I don’t have a super great explanation for why right now? Just that I definitely enjoy the other film more.

As far as murder mystery twists go, “it involved someone with multiple personalities” is pretty much as played out a twist as possible. This one does maybe get some points for taking that in a genuinely unique direction that I’m not sure I’ve seen another film do…but as for whether its twist actually feels well set up or well executed, that’s another matter. I would say the initial twist…almost works? But for me that final last minute true killer reveal…
