Put this off a few years, partly because The Souvenir, while I ired it a lot, was also a tough go, and well, that was clearly my fault because this is a genuine companion piece, a fascinating bookend to the earlier film that's often beautiful and heartbreakingly wise in the intangibles, even when it gets into more surreal imagery, playing with the line between reality and filmed visions at the end, the bubble under which the bad relationship with the addict takes place from the earlier film replaced with a genuine haunted survivor's melancholy - the shadow that hangs over everything, the surprise that the world's still there, until suddenly, it's not surprising any more, it just is.
