In our search for truth all we find is knowledge  and the reality that all that truly matters to ultimately unknowable. We can only see with our own eyes yet all attempts to see take us anywhere but the mirror. No one gazed at the watery surface of Solaris where they would only see their own reflection, they gaze at their guests with a refusal to acknowledge that the guests are themselves. I hoped I’d like this movie but never in a million years would I have expected to love it as much as I did. Not only is it an astoundingly character driven superhero movie (or, perhaps more accurately, revisionist superhero movie), but at its core it’s a beautifully crafted neo-western. Better than the Hobbit movies and that’s all that matters

Let’s be clear: this movie is not particularly good. That being said, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the transition from silent to sound film. Narratively it’s interesting but cliche, visually it’s a snooze, and the writing is just awful, but it’s place in history as the first true movie musical and an important landmark in the development of sound film cannot be overstated. It may not be good, but I can at least understand and respect why it won the Oscar

Yeah yeah the second half suffers from Marvelfication, but I’ll still defend this as perhaps the one piece of media produced in the MCU that is genuinely fantastic and shockingly moving. See what happens when you focus on telling unique intimate stories instead of all that vast multiverse world building bs, Marvel?
