The Descent is overall a good film that uses its claustrophobic tension to create thrills. It was an enjoyable ride through and through. It also had some great creature design that I thought was pretty clever.
Unfortunately the film never really made me feel uneasy. I guess if you are claustrophobic the film will hit differently. While I liked the creatures, they become kinda goofy after a while instead of scary. The film also relied too much on jumpscares, where there was one every 5 minutes or so. I will it that one of the first jumpscares was well made and really got me off my seat, but the following ones got pretty predictable. The characters were very one dimensional with unimportant dialogue, so it was hard to really feel something for the ones that died. The ending was good though and really encapsulated the overall theme of the film.
So, overall I think the film is a good effort, but it could have done so much more with its setting, characters and horror.
