Love the women's radiant hair, villain's arched eyebrows, and production design all around in this. The grug hero looks like Logan Paul, which works for the simple concept.

This Enter the Video Store box set from Arrow is well curated even if I don't love every movie therein.

This movie had the potential to be a hilarious, self-aware send-up of lib Afrolatry and unconscious acceptance of the white man's burden, but it doesn't tip the scales far enough to the parodic side and ends up feeling mawkish. Hal Ashby actually believes this stuff, which is funny to think about but not so much to watch. He does direct his first feature with confidence and moxie, using a wide variety of shots and starkly contrasting the landlord's family's mansion…

"What a beautiful retard" is emblematic of the movie's sophomoric, safe-edgy provocations, lauded of course by Letterboxd and critics. With no clearly established baseline level of decorum in the world Lanthimos constructs (social taboos changing in the course of a dinner scene), none of the ribaldry can properly as such in the mind, and it all feels like such a waste…
