Revenge

2017

★★★

One long anxiety trip that had me sweating my tits off. It is a classic rape-revenge thriller that is oozing with Fury Road style, but with a gory twist.

While these type of films are thrilling and very entertaining, a lot of this film was just too obvious for me. While the way that the rape is filmed and how Lutz portrays the helpless horror and vulnerability is very effective, the excessive amounts of blood and violence made this silly for me.

The brutal incident, as shocking as it is, was just so stupid and the way the film pursues from that point on is just forceful and lazy. For a film as artistic as this one, I would’ve expected something offbeat to happen or a risky choice to be made. Sadly, just about everything is predictable, and while I like some of the bold direction, it seemed like this film took itself too seriously.

The characters are also severely underwritten. Despite having the protagonist that you can’t help but root for, there isn’t anything about her that distinguishes her from the general victim in these types of films.

Instead of being a very important piece of feminist cinema, this turned into a video game-like thriller that bit off more than it could chew.

Although a lack of realism definitely turned me off, this thrill ride culminates in a bloody intense finale that captivated me entirely. It is sickening and disgusting, but I had a really fun time. But I completely understand why this wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

Despite not being too positive on this, I can’t help but be beyond excited for Coralie Fargeat’s buzzy Cannes entry, The Substance. It is definitely worth watching entertainment-wise, but I don’t think there is anything significant to take away from this.
