Friendship

The Banshees of Inisherin’s weird little brother. A surrealist tragicomedy that somehow achieved the bizarre tonal balance where it’s hilarious as shit but is also painfully sad. Tim Robinson is such a character. His dorky presence alone was strange, but his commitment to fit in and be the “fun guy” in the friendship consistently made me squirm in my seat of cringe. Incredible comedic performance. But what I didn’t expect is for this zany comedy to have some prominent thematic depth on adult male friendships and the challenges that they can create. The character of Craig Waterman is instantly iconic for how pathetically relatable he is and for how ionately I rooted for someone this big of a bum. Paul Rudd and Kate Mara thankfully understood the off-putting comedy and contributed a bunch of good moments as well. And the final shot is so beautiful to top it all off. Both human and deranged, this is one of, if not the absolute strangest and most uncomfortable thing I’ll see all year, and yet I can’t stop thinking about it.
